2017 Chevrolet Cruze Changes

For years, hatchbacks have been a preserve for the European market; however, of late, many buyers in North America are turning to hatchbacks as their preferred transport mode. In a recent statement, the president of GM North America Alan Batey said that time was ripe for their company to introduce the Cruze Hatch in America.

The big news for the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is the addition of a hatchback model, cleverly dubbed the “Cruze Hatch,” that marks the first time a five-door Cruze has been offered in the U.S. It may be here because of worldwide economy of scale, but so too will be a more efficient diesel engine that GM is combining with a new 9-speed automatic transmission. Those models won’t be here until later this year (sedan first, hatchback in 2018).

When Chevrolet first introduced the Cruze sedan for model year 2010, the new nameplate was intended to distance the compact car from generations of uncompetitive ancestors such as the Cavalier and the Cobalt. Indeed, that first-gen Cruze was General Motors’ best small-car effort in a long while, and it posted accordingly strong sales numbers. The redesigned second-generation Chevrolet Cruze arrived last year to take the baton, and it’s a similarly well-rounded contender, with a spacious interior, good fuel economy, and a comfortable ride.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Specs

Below we have summarized some of the reviews about the features of the car exterior and interior 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. The car is expected to be a comfortable car for the ride by the community.

The interior of the new Cruze hatch is identical to that of the sedan except for its increased space. The hatchback has 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats. This space can be expanded to 42 cubic feet by folding the rear seats. The hatch accommodates five passengers and offers sufficient leg and head room to all passengers though tall passengers will find the rear a bit constrained.  Its interior is roomier than its direct competitors e.g. it provides 2.0 inches greater legroom than the Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus.

The big news for 2017 is the addition of a hatchback to the Cruze lineup. Although mostly mechanically identical to the Cruze sedan, the hatch offers significantly more practicality with its 23-cubic-foot cargo area, which opens to a full 47 cubes with the rear seats folded. Otherwise, 2017 sees only minor tweaks, including some new colors and a second USB charging port for rear-seat passengers in LT and Premier trims.

The front looks more raked than its predecessors. At the front, the vehicle features a modified dual front grille which is flanked by narrower headlights similar to those of the Volt (halogen projector-beam headlights with LED lighting are offered as a option). These headlights seem to wrap around the front and then angle sharply above its front fenders. The hatch also features LED DRLs which augur well with the general design. It also features a layered line work on the hood and its side panels which complement its long wheelbase by giving the vehicle a beefy look.

Standard equipment on the Cruze L includes 15-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, remote locking/unlocking, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, Bluetooth connectivity, a four-speaker audio system with a USB port, OnStar (with 4G LTE connectivity and Wi-Fi hotspot), a rearview camera, and a MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch central touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone app integration.

The LT steps up to 16-inch alloy wheels, upgraded headlights with LED running lights, heated mirrors, cruise control, steering-wheel-mounted phone and audio controls, a rear center armrest with cupholders, and a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio. Hatchback models also get a cargo cover and rear spoiler. A charge-only USB port is added to models equipped with the automatic transmission, while manual-equipped models have a front armrest with a sliding feature.

At the back, the hatch features wraparound taillights and a stylish lift-gate which is integrated with a spoiler. Unlike the sedan which is offered in L, LS, LT and Premier trims, the hatchback will only be offered in LT and Premier trims. The vehicle will ride on 16-inch wheels though buyers have an option for 18-inch wheels. There will also be a sporty RS package that adds fog lights, side skirts, a splitter as well as an air diffuser at the rear.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Engine

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback will derive its power from a single drive-train. This is the same drive-train on the Cruze sedan. It is a turbocharged 1.4 L, 4-cylinder engine. The engine is capable of producing 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. The engine will be mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic HydraMatic transmission system.

The front-wheel-drive 2017 Chevrolet Cruze comes standard with a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the L, LS and LT trims. A six-speed automatic is optional for the LS and LT, while the Premier gets it as standard equipment. The automatic transmission also comes bundled with an automatic engine stop-start feature to save fuel when the car isn’t moving.

The nine-speed gearbox is an impressive unit, serving up smooth and seamless shifts and effectively allocating the 240 lb-ft of torque. Despite an 18 percent reduction in displacement compared with the previous-generation Cruze’s 2.0-liter diesel, the new car hits 60 mph in an identical 8.0 seconds (that’s only 0.4 second behind the performance of the gas model’s turbocharged 1.4-liter). The diesel’s aluminum engine block, along with general weight reduction in the new model, helps it drop 364 pounds versus the last diesel-powered Cruze. Roadholding and braking improve, too, with our car returning a respectable 0.84 g of grip and a 167-foot stop from 70 mph. The new engine also is quieter than before, making itself known only upon cold startup; once it’s warmed up, there’s little to no hint of diesel clatter.

According to the EPA, the Cruze sedan should return 32 mpg combined (28 city/39 highway) with the manual, 34 mpg combined (30 city/40 highway) with the automatic and 33 mpg combined (29 city/39 highway) in automatic-only Premier trim. Hatchback versions are expected to achieve 1 to 2 mpg less across the board.

Overall, these fuel economy numbers are very good for a small sedan or hatchback. However, in a Premier sedan, we averaged just 31.8 mpg on our highway-heavy, 115-mile test loop. On the same loop, a 2016 Honda Civic with the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine beat its EPA combined estimate by 1.8 mpg, and a 2015 Ford Focus with the 2.0-liter engine beat its combined rating by a whopping 11 mpg.

The original Cruze represented a monumental improvement over Chevy’s previous small cars, but the new Cruze fully redesigned last year truly brings the fight to the rest of the compact class. Front and center is a heavy emphasis on technology. Each Cruze comes with a touchscreen radio, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, a rearview camera and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality. Advanced safety features including rear parking sensors, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring are also available. But the Cruze isn’t just about shiny new gadgets. It also boasts a world-class cabin that feels more luxurious than most other compact cars and a ride that is both sporty and comfortable. Put a late-model Cavalier up against the Cruze, and you’d be stunned to learn they were produced by the same company.
