2017 Chevrolet Sonic Redesign

The Chevrolet Sonic was a fresh nameplate four years ago and in the U.S. the new path made a lot of sense, as it was refined, sporty, and far more safety-minded about-face from the Aveo that it replaced.

There’s no shortage of cars to choose from if you need something small and cost-effective. The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic stands out for its comparatively roomy interior, many standard features and available hatchback body style. It’s even fun to drive, especially if you opt for the turbocharged engine.

Available as a sedan or versatile hatchback, the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic slots between the tiny Spark and compact Cruze in Chevy’s lineup. With its efficiency, surprising feature content and easy driving manners, the Sonic has always been a worthy rival to the Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris. Thanks to a freshening for 2017, the new Sonic presents an even better option for younger drivers or commuters on a budget, thanks to the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility and available features like built-in Wi-Fi not usually found in a subcompact car. While base models still don’t offer power windows, those willing to spend a bit more can find plenty of value in the 2017 Sonic.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Release Date

During the 2016 New York Auto show, Chevrolet introduced the 2017 Sonic. The automaker claims that the new Sonic offers a more sporty and expressive take to the small car segment.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Specs

Below we have summarized some of the reviews about the features of the car exterior and interior 2017 Chevrolet Sonic. The car is expected to be a comfortable car for the ride by the community.

The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic is available in sedan and four-door hatchback body styles. Both can seat five passengers. Three trim levels are available: LS (sedan only), LT and Premier.

The base LS sedan offers 15-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, manual mirrors, power locks, remote locking/unlocking, a rearview camera, manual windows, air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, a height-adjustable driver seat, 60/40-split-folding rear seatbacks, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a driver information screen, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a 7-inch touchscreen interface, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality, OnStar telematics (includes 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot-spot capability) and a four-speaker sound system with a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.

The interior designers of the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic have designed a thoughtful interior which is focused on offering comfort, convenience and the trappings that come with new technology.  To add to the current design which is already well defined is a new detailed gauge cluster with an analog speedometer.

New for 2017 is a power driver’s seat making the Sonic the first model in this segment to offer this feature.  Other features include keyless entry and ignition, heated seats and a heated steering wheel. The seats are upholstered in a quality cloth. The exclusive RS package adds RS-logo on the floor mats, red cloth upholstery, piano black décor and an RS-badged flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Though it’s still the same car underneath, the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic gets a proverbial fresh coat of paint. Most notable is the Sonic’s revised styling; it now looks more like a small-scale version of the Malibu and SS sedans. Inside there’s a mildly redesigned center stack, and the gauge cluster has a more traditional layout than before. Several features that were optional on last year’s Sonic are now standard equipment, too, including the 7-inch central touchscreen, Bluetooth, a USB port, a rearview camera and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality. The price increases a bit to go along with all the extra stuff, but we think the additional tech is worth it.

The car comes with new updates which include LED lighting on the exterior and new technologies such as MyLink which integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its cabin. The refreshment adds to the Sonic’s character as a fun, efficient and affordable small hauler.

As mentioned above, the new Chevrolet Sonic has a new stance which is more expressive. The vehicle’s exterior design falls in line with other Chevrolet models such as the Trax, Cruze and Bolt EV. The front features a new hood, a revamped grille and projector-beam headlights. The front also features LED DRLs.

The rear, on the other hand, has also been refreshed and sports a redesigned bumper and revised taillights. On the sides, the Sonic still features its unique “wheels-at-the-corners stance” which when coupled with the upgrades make it look sportier. The vehicle rides on new 15-, 16-and 17-inch wheels. Four new exterior colors have also been introduced; they are Arctic Blue Metallic, Orange Burst Metallic, Cajum Red Tintcoat and Brimstone.

Another new feature on the 2017 Chevy Sonic is a 7.0-inch diagonal infotainment system. The system supports up-to-date technologies such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and 4GLTE which comes with a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Wi-Fi hotspot allows connection of up to 7 devices like smartphones, tablets or laptops.

Chevrolet hopes to capture the attention of younger buyers with the Sonic.  Chevrolet has established that 20% of the vehicle’s buyers are below 35 years and the automaker believes the upcoming model will do even better among this age group of buyers. Just like the outgoing model, the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic will be offered both in sedan and hatchback bodies.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Engine

Both the sedan and the hatchback are powered by a 1.8 L 4-cylinder Ecotec engine or an Ecotec 1.4 L turbocharged mill. Both engines produce 138 hp. However, the turbocharged engine produces 148 lb-ft of torque compared to 125 lb-ft of torque produced by the 1.8 L engine.

Chevrolet locked in the Chevy Sonic’s engine and transmission lineup with its launch many years ago. That hasn’t changed over time, and we consider it to be a good thing as in past years, provided you step up to the 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-4, which is a low-cost option on most of the lineup.

There are no official EPA ratings as of this writing but since there are no significant changes on the drive-trains; we expect the engine to retain the 2016 model’s ratings. The 1.8 L engine currently returns a combined fuel efficiency of 30 mpg while the turbocharger is more frugal at a 33 mpg on combined drives.
