2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Price

Ever since the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata debuted last year, our imagination has run wild concocting new body styles like a Miata coupe, a Miata retractable hardtop, and even a Miata shooting brake. But we didn’t predict the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Retractable Fastback (RF), which combines a power-retractable targa top with a gorgeous fastback roofline. In other words, it’s the Miata coupe you’ve been waiting for, only better.

According to me, retractable hardtops are an unnecessary burden to roadsters due to their heavier weight compared to soft rooftops. The previous Mazda MX-5 Miata offered a similar roof as an option and though the roof top brought about a different appeal to the Miata, I thought it was the last time I would be see the feature, I was wrong.

Mazda has never built a true Miata coupe, the closest examples being a couple of Japan-market fixed-hardtop conversions and the Power Retractable Hardtop (PRHT) introduced on the previous, NC generation. Perhaps the closest yet is the sexpot MX-5 Miata RF we just drove, even if it really is an extension of the PRHT branch of the family tree. To put a finer point on the RF, its closest current analogue just might be the far pricier Porsche 911 Targa, being a demi-convertible with a similarly functioning top mechanism.

For the 2017 model year, Mazda is in fact offering a full-fledged vehicle with a retractable roof. The automaker seems to have struck a good formula for the roof that gives the new vehicle dubbed the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF an attractive look, unlike many convertibles which don’t look attractive with their tops up.  The RF suffix on the name tag refers to its retractable Fastback roof.

2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Specs

Below we have summarized some of the reviews about the features of the car exterior and interior 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF. The car is expected to be a comfortable car for the ride by the community.

Inside, the cabin is as stylish as that of the standard Miata roadster. Actually, both are identical except for the adjustments made to accommodate the metal top. The cabin layout is centered on the driver. The cabin can be termed as simple but sporty. It features an upgraded dash with an uncluttered center stack.  The seats which feature enhanced supports are mounted much lower on the floor.

The exterior profile of the standard Miata and the MX-5-RF are almost identical except for its new fastback configurations. When the rooftop is up, the new model resembles a coupe. This is different from most hard-top models which look like their soft-top versions when their roofs are up. What’s more captivating about this model is the fact that its flying buttresses have stretched the cabin towards the rear which gives the targa a sporty look and highlights its muscular rear haunches.

The cabin also features a color touch-screen which displays important information on the vehicle. The screen is mounted on top of the center stack.  The targa roof does not compromise on its trunk space. The vehicle’s unique flying buttresses remain tucked behind the rear seats which together with the metal top give the cabin a different feel compared to the roadster. Bluetooth connectivity, Smartphone integration and a host of driving aids are also offered as standard.

Mazda clearly didn’t try to beat Fiat in the horsepower game either the Italian’s 164 hp turbo Miata, known as the Abarth 124 Spider, will always be the torquier twin. If you want more power, Mazda recommends looking into the mirror, and repeating “balance, balance, balance” for as long as it takes to chase your demons away. That being said, I was hesitant to believe that the RF would drive as nicely as the soft-top. While 113 lbs. might be a surprisingly low weight penalty for a proper roof, 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque doesn’t offer much of a reserve to cope with the added mass.

2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Engine

Under the hood, the 2017 Miata MX-5 RF sports the same drive-trains as the standard Miata. We understand that the US models will be offered with a single engine choice.  The unit is a 2.0 L 4-cylinder SkyActiv-G engine which pumps out 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque.

However, due to the addition of the hard roof-top, expect the vehicle to be a little slower than its standard roadster sister. The roadster runs from standstill to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. The RF will probably need 2-3 more seconds to complete the same run.

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is available in two trim levels: Club and Grand Touring. We prefer the Club for its available sport-oriented hardware, although buyers seeking more comfort and amenities will gravitate toward the Grand Touring’s longer list of convenience features. Both trim levels are equipped with the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (155 horsepower, 148 pound-feet of torque) and are available with a manual or automatic transmission.

In other markets, buyers will have an option for a 1.5 L SkyActiv-G engine. This 4-cylinder engine produces 129 hp and 111 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the 2.0 L engine, this engine is only combined with a 6-speed manual transmission system. Models with this engine will be slower and will take around 8.5 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph.

In either version, the Miata’s 155-hp 2.0-liter inline-four is unchanged, and the car remains quick enough. In keeping with other recent Mazdas, the RF’s 4.6-inch digital driver-information display switches to a full-color format; this change, as well as the RF’s steering and transmission improvements, is sure to be ported over to the regular roadster soon.
