Mercedes wanted its top-of-the-line family crossover to tap into that heritage, so last year’s GL-Class has become this year’s GLS-Class. The idea is that it’s the S-Class of SUVs, and we have to admit that this well-mannered beast makes a pretty compelling case.

We expect new crossover in near future. Mid-cycle refreshment is scheduled for 2017 Mercedes GLS, which was GL class before. This SUV is one of the most luxurious models in the segment, and company market it as S class of crossovers. Few changes are made on styling, while transmission and powertrain should be revisited.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class marks a significant, mid-cycle upgrade for what was previously knew as the GL-Class. As part of a nomenclature change sweeping the entire brand, each of the German luxury maker’s sport-utility vehicles has received new badging and a full or partial makeover to bring the lineup into more obvious parallels with its sedans so this large, three-row SUV becomes the GLS, to align it with the largest S-Class sedan. Hence the S in its new name.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class Engine

The 2017 Mercedes GLS crossover will be propelled from 3.0-l BiTurbo V6 engine, ready to deliver 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft torque. This engine uses direct injection for better performance. Other models get power from 4.7-l or 5.5-l V8 units. First can produce 449 hp and 516 lb-ft torque, while output of second is even higher., with 577 hp. Also, one diesel variant of 2017 GLS could be purchased, and it is BiTurbo V6 with 3.0-l displacement. All engines are mated to a seven-speed, 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS350d is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 engine that generates 255 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. The GLS450 uses up to a 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline V6 rated at 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The GLS550 gets a 4.6-liter V8 that churns out 449 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. All three of these models come standard with all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Three different powertrains are offered in the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS: a 362-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6; a 449-hp 4.7-liter V-8; and, finally a 577-hp 5.5-liter V-8 in the AMG performance model. As in the prior GL, all three engines are turbocharged.

The top-spec non-AMG model is the GLS550, and according to one Mercedes display we saw at the launch event, it is “lavishly motorized” thanks to a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 putting out 449 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. From behind the wheel, this engine is sufficient in the same way that a gas-powered blender is. Yes, it’s fun, but you rarely have a chance to use the available power. The lower-cost V-6s once again are the sweet spots of the lineup, and the diesel-powered GLS350d even gets a small power bump over its predecessor.
