2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Review

The Porsche Boxster was first launched in 1996 as the automaker’s entry-level mid-engine sports car. At the launch, it was Porsche’s first roadster since the 550 Spyder.  Though it faced hostility in the market at first, the model quickly rose to become the automaker’s best seller in terms of volume before the Cayenne SUV was unveiled in 2003.

Having escaped Michigan in February for the south of France to sample the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster convertible, we arrive to find one of our two expectations for the trip dashed. It’s drizzling and 50 degrees at Michelin’s test track on the outskirts of Marseille, where we’ve gathered to experience some early prototypes of the newly turbocharged, four-cylinder Boxster and Boxster S. Everything else is going swimmingly, no pun intended. Buckled into the 718 Boxster S’s passenger seat, I’m fighting against lateral g’s to hold myself upright and scribble notes as the car blasts into a banked, high-speed curve. Michael, a Porsche development hotshoe, jerks the wheel back to center as we hit the straightaway portion of Michelin’s small high-speed oval. My pen uncontrollably draws a diagonal slash across the notepad, graphing in real time the inverse relationship between grip and penmanship.

Now, 20 years later, the model has received its most important upgrade; Porsche has done away with its naturally aspirated V-6 engines in favor of turbocharged, flat-four engines. The automaker argues that the reason for the change is so as to help reduce emissions as well as improve efficiency.  This makes the Boxster the first Porsche sports car to be powered by a 4-cylinder in a long time.

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Specs

Below we have summarized some of the reviews about the features of the car exterior and interior 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster. The car is expected to be a comfortable car for the ride by the community.

The new 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster has received a host of new touches.  Despite the new touches, the model is easily recognizable as a Boxster. At the front, the vehicle sports a wider front with a new bumper.  Its center grille just below the license plate has also been modified. Side air intakes are wider and thinner as are the LED DRLs.

Its Porsche Communication Management system features audio interfaces, cell phone preparation, an 110-watt Sound Package Plus and a navigation module with voice control. A Connect Plus module is also offered to offer a wider access to a wide array of online services. Other features are basically the same as those of the outgoing models.

The 718 Boxster is a two-seat convertible and represents Porsche’s entry-level model positioned beneath the 911 in the company’s sports car lineup. Its sister car, the hardtop-only Cayman, will be updated later this year. Two models are available, the base 300-hp Boxster standard car and the 350-hp Boxster S.

Standard features include 18-inch wheels with high-performance summer tires (19-inch wheels for the Boxster S), bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, a power-folding soft top, an automatically deploying rear spoiler, front and rear parking sensors, a wind deflector, water-repellent side windows and hill-hold brake functions.

On the inside, you also get cruise control, air-conditioning, a manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, partial leather upholstery, six-way-adjustable seats with electric backrest adjustments, a universal garage door opener, a rearview camera, Bluetooth and a six-speaker audio system with satellite and HD radio and auxiliary input.

Despite styling that stays very close to the outgoing model, Porsche says every body part is new except for the front and rear trunk lids, windshield, and convertible top. Larger air intakes up front, a larger and deeper side air intake ahead of the rear wheels, and a Porsche-branded tail fin spanning the distance between the taillights set the 2017 model apart from previous Boxsters. LED headlights with Porsche’s signature four-point daytime running lights are optional.

The DRLs are mounted as separates pieces rather than integrated into the vents like the outgoing Boxsters. The front fascia also features new bi-xenon headlights and an option for 4-point DRLs which are a new feature to the Boxster.

At the rear, the new 718 Boxster features redesigned taillights and a deck-lid.  The taillights sport 3D LED technology and are also integrated with 4-point brake lights.  The vehicle also sports a new black strip which features the “Porsche “lettering between the brake lights. Other features include a new apron with a revised diffuser and a mid-mounted exhaust system similar to the outgoing models. The base model features rectangular exhaust tip while the Boxster S has a pair of round tips.

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Engine

The new engine also improves efficiency of the vehicle by 14%. The power boost helps the vehicle move from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds when paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and 4.7 seconds with the optional PDK. Selecting the optional Sport Chrono Package drops the above time to 4.5 seconds.  The model can hit a top speed of 170 mph.

A dearth of major chassis changes leave few doubts in our minds that it is as good to drive, if not better, than before. Every 718 employs new 13.0-inch front brakes. The Boxster borrows the outgoing Boxster S’s pieces, and the new Boxster S cribs its slightly thicker rotors (1.3 versus 1.1 inches) from the 911 Carrera. All Boxsters wear new (albeit identical-looking) body panels save for the hood, trunk lid, and windshield frame. It’s essentially a heavy refresh of the third-generation Boxster, with the biggest changes taking place just ahead of the Boxster duo’s rear wheels: turbocharged flat-four engines displacing either 2.0 or 2.5 liters. We’ve been eager to explore how they measure up against their predecessors’ excellent 2.7- and 3.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-sixes.

The 718 Boxster S on the other hand, is powered by a 2.5 L turbocharged flat-four engine in place of the previous 3.4 L V-6.  The engine produces 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. This is 35 hp and 43 lb-ft of torque more than the outgoing models.  With a manual transmission, the vehicle hits 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and 4.2 seconds with a PDK. With the Sports Chrono package, the vehicle hits 60 mph from standstill in 4 seconds flat. It has a top speed of 177 mph, 5 mph more than the outgoing model.

It’s not surprising that the 718s feel livelier than outgoing Boxsters the 2.0-liter is 35 horsepower and 74 lb-ft stronger than the outgoing 2.7-liter six, and the 2.5-liter is more potent than the old Boxster S’s 3.4-liter six by 35 ponies and 43 lb-ft. Porsche says the 718 Boxster will reach 60 mph in as little as 4.5 seconds, or 0.7 second quicker than the old car. The 718 Boxster S is said to reach the same speed in just 4.0 seconds flat, a half-second improvement.
