2017 Porsche 911 Redesign

Porsche has decided to hook up all the 911 models with turbochargers but despite the new development, the Turbo and its twin sister Turbo S will still sit at the top of the 911 lineup. The models even come with more power to ensure they remain at the summit.

The Porsche 911 has undergone a major update for the 2017 model year with an all-new turbocharged engine, standard active dampers, new styling with improved aerodynamics, new safety features, optional rear axle steering, and a new entertainment system.

The 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera bears the typical scars of midcycle fiddling. There are new headlights, new taillights, and a new touch-screen dashboard display. And that matters not one iota to us. In fact, those are but infinitesimal flickers in a grand night sky compared to the new 911’s biggest step forward, which requires you step back and peek under the engine covers of the Carrera and Carrera S. There, affixed to familiar flat-six engines, you’ll find twin turbochargers. Close the lids, and nary a script “Turbo” badge is visible.

The automaker plans to kick off 2016 in style and will display the 911 Turbos at the Detroit Auto Show in January before taking them to dealer showrooms in April. Both models will be availed in Coupe and Convertible bodies.

The 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo, will be equipped with the Sport Chrono Package as standard. The package comes with the GT sport steering wheel adopted from the 918 Spyder and a mode switch mounted on the steering wheel. This switch enables the driver to choose among the 4 available modes (Normal, Sport, Sport + and the customizable Individual mode).

The base model 2017 911 Carrera starts with 19-inch staggered-width alloy wheels with summer tires, adaptive suspension dampers (PASM), automatic bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, four-way power-adjustable front seats (with manual fore-aft), a manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, partial leather upholstery and trim, a 7-inch touchscreen, a navigation system, voice controls, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, WiFi connectivity and an eight-speaker audio system with a CD player, dual USB ports, dual SD-card slots, satellite/HD radio and 11GB of digital music storage. The convertible features a power-operated soft top and wind deflector.

To the uninitiated, it will be hard to tell the difference between the 911 Carrera’s, the outgoing Turbos and the new 911 Turbos as they all look almost similar. However, a closer look reveals the subtle differences.

On the sides the new 911 Turbos feature fewer changes. Gone are plastic door-handle recesses which have been replaced with integrated recesses meant to reduce its drag. At the back, the Turbos feature lengthwise air vents on their rear hoods and revised 3D tail lamps that look wider. There are air outlets on the outside wedges of the bumper and reflectors that cross over the air outlets all new for 2017 models.

The dual exhaust outlets on either side have also been slightly tweaked while the deck-lid features vertical slats. The 911 Turbo and Turbo S will both ride on 20-inch wheels wrapped in high-performance rubber.

The new 911 Turbos feature a set of new headlights with two projectors replacing the single piece in the outgoing models. The front also features dual LED fog lights which have a tube-like shape, modified air intakes and a lower nose.

If you feel that is not enough, you can choose the Turbo S which comes with additional features and options for customization. The Turbo S adds 18-way power adjustable seats, extra doses of carbon-fiber trim, anti-roll system, 2-tone leather interior, carbon-fiber ceramics and a 7-inch touch screen that is used to control its Communications Manager Infotainment system not forgetting a 555-watt Bose audio system.

2017 Porsche 911 Engine

Good news to speed lovers, the new 911 Turbos come with a revamped engine with more muscle to flaunt on the streets. As with the outgoing models, the Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S feature a single drive-train. However, the engine has been equipped to offer more output. The unit is a 3.8 L, flat-6. The engine on the 911 Turbo is enhanced with two Turbos with larger compressors, new injectors, intake ports and a higher fuel pressure which make it produce 540 hp from 520 hp on the outgoing models.

The 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera, Carrera 4 and Targa 4 models are motivated by a turbocharged 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder (flat-6) engine rated at 370 hp and 331 pound-feet of torque, while the S and 4S variants receive an upgraded version of the same engine with 420 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.

The 911 Turbo steps up to a turbocharged 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine that cranks out 540 hp and 486 lb-ft (523 lb-ft with overboost). The Turbo S goes nuts with a tweaked version of that engine rated at 580 hp and 516 lb-ft (553 lb-ft with overboost).

Also updated for 2017 is the 911 Turbo, which can be had in either coupe or soft-top convertible body styles. The Turbo model is powered by a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six engine making 540 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque in standard trim and 580 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque in “Turbo S” trim. All Turbo models utilize a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

As expected of Porsche, the 911 offers ample headroom and legroom in its form-fitting front seats. Those seats can be specified in a few different forms, with varying degrees of adjustability and lateral bolstering, but even the base partial-power chairs provide superb support for both long-distance and enthusiastic driving. The rear “seats,” however, are very small; most 911 owners know them better for the seatbacks that flip down to become useful cargo shelves. The front trunk (remember, there’s an engine in the back) measures a paltry 5.1 cubic feet — and it’s even smaller in the 911 R.
