2017 Toyota Prius Prime Changes

The Prius Prime is an all-new plug-in hybrid that replaces the previous Prius Plug-in. Compared to its predecessor, the 2017 Prius Prime is more efficient, features new tech, and can travel longer distances on all-electric power thanks to a larger lithium-ion battery, with twice the capacity of the previous model.

With 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, Toyota continues to surprise me. While other automakers are busy trying to improve their EVs and hybrid technologies, the Japanese automaker is proceeding with caution.  When we all expected a plug-in Prius with a huge electric range, Toyota has just improved the model slightly.

The outgoing Prius with only 12 miles of pure electric range seemed like a conventional vehicle compared to some rival models. Though the automaker has almost doubled its range to 22 miles, the new range remains below par compared to models like the Chevrolet Volt.

Compared to the base Prius, the Prius Prime packs a larger battery that supports approximately 25 miles of electric-only range and, crucially, can be recharged by plugging into an electrical port. Replenishing the battery via a regular wall 120-volt socket takes about 5.5 hours, while a Level 2 (240-volt) charger shortens this time to a little more than two hours. Of course, you could also choose to never plug it in and simply refuel with gasoline, and it will operate simply as a more efficient Prius.

2017 Toyota Prius Prime Interior

2017 Toyota Prius Prime Specs

Below we have summarized some of the reviews about the features of the car exterior and interior 2017 Toyota Prius Prime. The car is expected to be a comfortable car for the ride by the community.

The Prime carries the same Prius look we are all familiar with.  It continues the Prius principals of ‘minimal air resistance’. At the front, it features a new grille with automatic grille shutters. The grille is flanked by a pair of new horizontal quad LED headlamps and vertical LED DRLs.

For audiophiles, the vehicle comes with a 10-speaker JBL GreenEdge sound system. This system is offered in a package which also packs an Entune App suite which gives access to Pandora iHeartRadio, Slacker Radio, Yelp, Facebook and Destination Search among others.

The available 11.6-in. HD multimedia display is as big as your imagination, with an intuitive feel. Comfort and convenience are a priority inside Prius Prime, with seats that help support you in almost any adventure. It’s a welcoming space that invites more possibilities.

Other features include Qi wireless charging and two additional 4.2-inch display screens. Its automatic climate control is uniquely designed such that it focuses air flow specifically to where passengers are seated.

The rear is a bit bulging and features wing-shaped taillights which are also hooked up with LED lighting. Overall, the model features strong character lines and angular curves.

Dimension-wise, the Prime is slightly larger than its predecessor by around 2.4 inches and wider by 0.6 inches. It sits an inch lower than the outgoing Prius. Its body structure is made of high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber which translate to improved efficiency and performance.

Though the range-topping Advanced trim level is packed with a long list of tech features, it commands a large premium over the others. Going with the mid-grade Premium trim level is the approach we recommend because the Premium better aligns with the Prius Prime’s value proposition. It’s also the cheapest way to get the significantly larger (11.6-inch) central touchscreen, which is a big improvement over the base 7-inch screen. In the bargain, the Premium adds upgraded cabin materials and a power driver seat, plus keyless entry/start and wireless smartphone charging.

2017 Toyota Prius Prime Engine

Serving as the Prius family’s flagship model, the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime features an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain that includes a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle engine, two electric motors, and a 8.8 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that’s twice as big as the one used in the previous Prius Plug-In. The larger battery provides enough energy for 22 miles of EV range and Toyota says the 2017 Prius Prime has a total range of over 600 miles. While in EV mode, the Prius Prime has a top speed of 84 mph and replenishing the battery takes approximately two hours with a 240-volt outlet or 5.5 hours with a standard outlet.

The petrol engine is carried over from the 2016 Prius. It is a 1.8 L Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine.  The engine is rated to return 120 MPGe which is a huge improvement (26%) from the previous model. The electric motor also provides an improved electric range of 22 miles as said earlier. The automaker has also raised the speed while on the EV mode to 84 mph.

The Prime’s engine is a little different from the standard Prius hybrid drive-train in that it uses a dual-mode generator system. This means the system can use both the generator and electric motor to boost its acceleration.

Its 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is recharged via regenerative braking which helps improve its fuel economy. The engine is also recharged via a household current for 5.5 hours while a 240-volt system can recharge the battery in half that time. Toyota also adds that when fully recharged and with a full tank, the vehicle can attain a range of 600 miles.
