2017 Volvo S90 Concept

The 2017 Volvo S90 replaces the S80 as the flagship sedan of the Volvo range and is the second vehicle to utilize the automaker’s modular SPA platform, which first debuted on the second-generation XC90 SUV. All S90s come standard with Pilot Assist, which is Volvo’s semi-autonomous driving assistance system.

Slide into the 2017 Volvo S90’s seats and you’re immersed in an elegant, minimalist cabin that rivals anything from its German contemporaries. This new interior, with its wood inlays and chrome and metal accents wrapping from door to door across the dash, is arguably the S90’s greatest leap from its comparatively tepid predecessor.

The 2017 Volvo S90 sedan arrives to replace the S80 in the Swedish automaker’s lineup. Though it’s more than that; Volvo is starting over, with the S90 a fully reconceived flagship sedan built on a new platform, with new engines under the hood, a new design concept, and virtually no carry-over pieces from the previous sedan.

In the recent past, we have seen Volvo significantly bridge the gap between its sedans and those from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The automaker is still determined to bridge the gap even further. After releasing a new design language with the S90 sedan, the automaker has now added extra performance features to the sedan to make it even more attractive.

2017 Volvo S90 Specs

Below we have summarized some of the reviews about the features of the car exterior and interior 2017 Volvo S90. The car is expected to be a comfortable car for the ride by the community.

Volvo seems to have a standard for its R-Design models. The S-90 R-Design wears the same interior upgrades as the XC90 R-Design. The upgrades begin with sporty contour seats which are upholstered in Nappa and Nubuck leather. The steering wheel, gear knob are also wrapped in perforated leather.

Standard features included on the 2017 S90 T5 include navigation, 18-inch alloy wheels, a portrait-style nine-inch touchscreen, power-adjustable front seats with memory, a sunroof, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry/start, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors. Higher trim levels add LED headlights with the “Thor’s Hammer” LED accents, heated and ventilated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch display replacing traditional gauges, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Available options include a 360-degree view camera, heated rear seats, an automatic parking system, a power-opening trunk, a head-up display, a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, and a rear air suspension system.

The vertically oriented dash vents Volvo calls them Airblades look terrific, as does the polished metal on the dashboard’s lower edge. The key element in this interior is the 9.0-inch, portrait-oriented LCD screen. It controls several of the usual functions, including the climate-control system. As a result, the number of buttons and knobs on the dashboard has been greatly diminished. Moreover, this upright display works ideally for the navigation function, as it makes visible more of the map depicting the road ahead than does a landscape-oriented screen. In our opinion, this orientation should be the industry standard.

Standard equipment on the base Momentum trim includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and foglights, a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a rearview camera, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 10-way power front seats, a navigation system, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a 10-speaker audio system with USB and auxiliary inputs, and satellite radio. Other touches include birch interior accents, power-folding rear head restraints (improves visibility when rear passengers aren’t present), illuminated door handle approach lighting, and a high-gloss black grille.

Upgrading to Inscription trim brings 19-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, headlight washers, Nappa leather upholstery, upgraded front seats with both heating and cooling, a leather-wrapped dash panel, walnut trim accents, four-zone climate control, a 12-inch instrument display and Apple CarPlay integration.

Volvo has also rebranded the floor mats, tread plates and pedals with R-Design logos. In addition, the models feature a 12.3-inch infotainment system. To complete the upgrade is an illumination package that makes the interior look more stylish and exudes the great attention to detail the automaker had in crafting the cabin.

At 195.4 inches long and riding on a 115.8-inch wheelbase, the S90 is smack in the middle of these cars in size. However, at 74.0 inches wide and 56.8 inches high, it’s a bit wider and lower than most of them. That’s because the S90’s styling cues come from the Concept Coupe that Volvo revealed in 2013.

From a far, the 2017 Volvo S90 R-Design is identical to the standard S90. Actually, you can only tell the difference upon a closer look. The exterior upgrades are similar to those done on the XC90 R-Design. At the front, the S90 R-Design features a smaller lower grille that is narrower than the main grille unlike the standard model whose lower grille stretches the entire width of the apron. The bumper has also been modified.

The intakes below the main headlights have been modified also and they now feature LED fog lights. The main grille features horizontal slats rather than the standard model’s vertical ones. A black trim completes the front fascia redesign; it has replaced the chrome trim on standard models.

2017 Volvo S90 Engine

We all expected a new engine or at least a power hike but Volvo has just maintained power output as in the standard S90. However, the model has offered all drive-trains available in the standard S90.

Although four-cylinder engines are becoming common in this expensive class of cars as manufacturers reach for fuel efficiency, most of the S90’s competitors offer six- and even eight-cylinder alternatives. Not so in the S90, where performance will leave you disappointed if you want a zero-to-60-mph time that starts with a 4. The best the T6 is likely to be able to do is 5.1 seconds, according to our estimates. On the other hand, while EPA fuel-economy ratings have not yet been released, we expect a combined figure of at least 27 mpg combined with the T5 version and 25 mpg or so with the T6.

The 2017 Volvo S90 is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine (2.0-liter) available in two power grades: T5 and T6. The engine in T5 models makes 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the T6 engine uses both a turbocharger and supercharger (“twin-charged”) to generate 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission. T5 models are front-wheel drive, while T6 models are all-wheel drive.

There will be three choices for North America: a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in a T5 model, making 250 horsepower; a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in a T6, producing 316 hp; and a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 working with an electric drive system in a range-topping T8 Twin Engine. The T8 model will be rated at 400 hp for the U.S. market, but Volvo hasn’t yet released more details about this version, which will arrive later in the model year. These powertrains work through an excellent 8-speed automatic transmission, and for now T5 models have front-wheel drive while T6 models get all-wheel drive.

As such the S90 R-Design will feature a turbocharged 4-cylinder T5 gasoline engine which produces 254 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, the gasoline turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder  T6 capable of 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque as well as the T8, a hybrid engine rated at 410 horses. These are the only engines available for the North American market.

The 2017 S90 currently offers two engines starting with a 2.0-liter turbo-four producing 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque on the T5 model. Under the hood of the T6 is a 2.0-liter super- and turbocharged I-4 with 316 hp and 295 lb-ft. Both are paired exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission. T5 models are front-drive only while all-wheel drive is standard on the more powerful T6. EPA-rated fuel economy is excellent at 23/34 mpg city/highway for the S90 T5 and 22/31 mpg with the T6. A plug-in hybrid variant will arrive in 2017 with the same engine in the T6 trim and paired to an electric motor for a maximum output of 400 hp. The car’s electric motor is mounted in the rear, which means the S90 T8 is all-wheel drive.

Motivation comes from two versions of Volvo’s Drive-E engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, coupled to an eight-speed Aisin-Warner automatic transmission. Entry-level T5 models have a less potent Drive-E, developing 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and driving the front wheels, while the T6 has all-wheel drive and a more powerful version of this engine, with 316 ponies and 295 lb-ft.
