2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept

Volkswagen has revealed the updated European-market Golf, but you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference unless you were a die-hard VW fan. And even then it would be tricky. The bumpers front and rear have been tweaked. The taillights are now fully LED, with nifty animated turn signals similar to those on Audis, and the optional Xenon headlights give way to LED versions. However, these modest exterior changes hide much more significant changes inside the cabin and under the hood.

Like the rest of the family, the GTI underwent a bit of nip and tuck. I don’t know why they are calling it a 2017 car when it’s not going to reach European dealerships until at least March. However, VW USA didn’t even announce the facelift, so it might be a 2018 or later.

Having been launched in Europe in 2012, the Mk7 Volkswagen Golf is now entering its fifth year on the market. Much has changed between then and now, so it’s not surprising that VW has seen it fit to give the compact hatchback a freshening.

2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Release Date

While the updated Golfs will be hitting European showrooms shortly as a 2017 model, U.S.-market models will be updated for the 2018 model year, and some of the features may not make the trip across the Atlantic. Given the model year designation, the U.S. model should make its debut in the spring, possibly at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Specs

Below we have summarized some of the reviews about the features of the car exterior and interior 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The car is expected to be a comfortable car for the ride by the community.

There are plenty of hot hatchbacks that offer a digital dash, not necessarily a 12.3-inch screen like the 2018 GTI, but still entertaining. For example, the Kia cee’d GT forwent analog conventions in 2014.

The only changes made to the exterior design are the new bumpers, and LED headlights in place of the previous xenon units. In particular, the sporty GTI and Golf R variants get some extra details around their fog lights and larger openings in their front bumpers.

The first is the new infotainment system, which VW describes as a next-generation system. The base setup relies on a 6.5-inch touchscreen display in the center stack. Above this is an 8.0-in display and further still is a 9.2-in display. The latter will feature a gesture control in addition to proximity sensors.

Inside, the entire infotainment system lineup has been replaced with a new generation of Volkswagen’s MIB system (MIB III). The optional 6.5-inch screen becomes the entry offering, the mid-range systems now have 8.0-inch screens instead of 6.5-inch ones, and the range-topping “Discover Pro” system now features a 9.2-inch glass screen with gesture control. Following their launch in the Golf, the new systems will be rolled out into the rest of the Volkswagen lineup.

New Golfs also get substantial changes inside. The interior itself is mostly the same, but it now contains large screens. The instrument cluster has lost analog gauges completely in favor of a digital display like those in some Audi vehicles. The center stack also gets larger screens on every trim level, with the largest measuring in at 9.2 inches. This top-level screen gets complimentary touch buttons for controls such as volume. We hope it works better than Honda’s design. The new infotainment system will feature gesture control, too.

Volkswagen is also expanding the Golf’s already considerable suite of driver assistance systems, making the compact hatch capable of partially automated driving. The most significant is Traffic Jam Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane assist into a system that will keep the car centered in the lane and automatically brake and accelerate in traffic, though the driver’s hands still have to be on the steering wheel.

2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Engine

Mechanically, Europe’s updated Golf will serve as the launch pad for Volkswagen’s new 1.5-liter turbo-four. It will make 148 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in regular flavor and 128 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque in the more-economical BlueMotion variant. The new engine can pull off a new trick, too: shut off while coasting, like that of a hybrid, providing an incremental fuel economy improvement.

The new Golf and GTI both get some noteworthy powertrain updates. The standard Golf now offers Volkswagen’s turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder with cylinder deactivation and a variable geometry turbocharger. This high-tech engine comes in two versions, one with 148 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, followed by a higher-efficiency 128-horsepower BlueMotion variant. However, according to a VW representative, the 1.5-liter engine won’t be coming here initially. If it ever comes here, expect VW only to bother bringing over the 148-horsepower variant.

Of more interest to performance fans is the increase in power for the GTI. The standard GTI gets 227 hp while a GTI Performance model gets 242 hp. In the U.S., the GTI currently has 210 hp, and 220 hp with an available Performance Package.
